Brrrr! It is -13 degrees as I write this and the low today is -30.... Needless to say, its a day to enjoy indoors for the most of us.
And we want that to be nice, WARM & Safe for you! So here are a few HVAC safety tips to keep in mind during these freezing cold temps!
- Make sure you have working Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Many furnaces create carbon monoxide, a deadly gas. When operating correctly, this gas is vented outdoors. The carbon monoxide detector should detect this gas should your furnace or ventilation system not be working properly.
- Check the furnace exhaust: If your exhaust pipe is clogged, the carbon monoxide may not exit as designed. Keep this area clean and clear and check periodically.
- Clean/replace your filter: A clean filter is important for efficient operation of the furnace and HVAC system. A dirty filter can cause a potential risk of fire.
If your furnace stops working, call for service right away. The waits can be significant to get a service provider onsite, so do not delay. If you potentially need a space heater, contact your local Menards, Lowes, Home Depot, Hardware Store, or the like ASAP. As we have personally experienced, those frequently sell out during freezing temps.
